Creative Metier Press Release: Ten Kenyan businesses with high potential for growth participate in exclusive executive coaching programme

Creative Metier is proud to announce the launch of an executive coaching programme for senior leaders of a select group of Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs) in Kenya. The programme aims to improve the participating business’ performance by addressing their leadership development capacity through executive coaching. It is one of five winning entries of the 2016 Argidius-ANDE Talent Challenge competition, designed to support scalable models to address human capital constraints for SGBs in emerging markets.

Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs) are defined by ANDE as businesses that are commercially viable with five to 250 employees that have significant potential, and ambition, for growth. Typically, SGBs seek growth capital from $20,000 to $2 million.

The programme will commence with a three day workshop: “Coaching to Transform Business Performance”, from 25 to 27 January 2017 in Nairobi and is followed by monthly coaching sessions with an executive coach for six months.

20 participants for ten SGBs have been selected into the programme (two participants from each company) in Kenya and there is significant potential for growth. The participants are CEOs or senior managers, reporting directly to the CEO.  The selection process took into account diversity in terms of industry, size and stage of growth, gender of leadership, profit motivation (for profit, social enterprise) and other factors in order to ensure participants bring a breadth of experience to the workshop. The businesses selected are: Adpack Limited, Compulynx Limited, Merry Cliff Junior School, Deepa Dosaja Limited, Perfection Plus Limited, Odyssey Capital Limited, Harmony Solutions Limited, Markmann & Co. Limited, Swiss Corporate Interiors Limited and Mohazo Eximpo Limited.

SGBs in the region account for up to 90% of businesses in the region , yet most of the entrepreneurs leading these companies don’t have formal business training or access to formal leadership development support.  In addition, the experience of many CEOs and senior leaders is a lonely one, with significant business challenges to address, and often no sounding board to think these issues through. SGBs are generally fast paced, and leaders are unlikely to have the time to devote to external classroom based programmes.  Creative Metier’s experience suggests that there is a particular shortage of support for CEOs in leading the development of their firms.

One service that can support SGB leaders to address their business challenges is executive coaching. Executive coaching offers one-to-one support to leaders to resolve the complex business challenges they face in their own operating contexts. As an intervention, it is well suited to the realities faced by CEOs in SGBs.  Executive coaching allows for flexible delivery ensuring the timing, frequency and location of the sessions are optimal for the leader.

In 2016 Creative Metier led an executive coaching programme for nine senior executives from leading financial institutions in East Africa and experienced first-hand the transformative power of executive coaching, demonstrating the value of developing a coaching culture. As early as three months into the coaching programme, participants had begun initial work to influence organisational change and noted personal transformation. Two participating institutions, The Jubilee Insurance Company of Kenya and Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) Kenya, continue to make significant investments in embedding coaching in how they lead and manage their teams.
